23rd August 2011 Posted in Blog, Events, Technical Writers, Training Programs 0 Comments

Users are the main concern when it comes to technical writing. Beyond words, beyond formatting, and beyond details, technical writers should be thinking about the end user. If you’re not worried about the user when writing, then you can’t write effectively or create a document that can be used consistently.

Adobe Systems is offering an e-seminar to help technical writers and technical writing teams with conveying information to users. Read on to find out how this seminar will help you.

Adobe Offers Document Structuring Webinar This Friday

27th July 2011 Posted in Blog, Events 2 Comments

This Friday, July 29th, Adobe is hosting a free webinar titled, Document Structuring 101: The Difference between Unstructured and XML from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM PDT.

As its title suggests, the focus of the webinar is to look at the difference between unstructured content and XML content. If you haven’t yet jumped on the DITA/XML bandwagon in structuring your documentation, the webinar will give you some ideas of the benefits of using XML. It could just give you the motivation you need to jump in, or some ammunition you can use if you want to move your team in that direction.

This Adobe webinar will feature Scott Abel, The Content Wrangler, and Tom Aldous, Adobe Product Evangelist for its Technical Communication Suite.

The webinar will be delivered via GoToMeeting. Once you register, you’ll have access to links that will allow you to get set up and test your system to make sure it’s fully compatible for the presentation. If you’re not able to do that in advance, you’ll want to give yourself a little extra time before the webinar begins so you don’t miss any of the presentation.

Register for the Document Structuring 101: The Difference between Unstructured and XML Adobe seminar.

Adobe Offering Free eSeminar for Setting Up Help Projects

15th July 2011 Posted in Blog, Documentation, Events 0 Comments

EVENT: Adobe eSeminar – Getting it Right from the Start: Setting Up Online Help and Documentation Projects Correctly
WHEN: Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM US/Pacific

Technical communications tools like RoboHelp make it easy to create large, complex documentation projects without much advance project planning. Technical writers often see that capability as a great way to jump right on and save time on planning the project. However, taking what seems to be a practical, time-saving approach to help development can in fact be detrimental not only to the value of the final project deliverables, but to the budget, the delivery date and even to the morale of the documentation team. If nothing else, consistency will be lacking and additional time may be required to go back and make corrections.

Frustration can be avoided by defining as many settings as possible when the project starts, while there’s still time to think. And, at least when it comes to consistency, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort, often just a day or two to define a small number of crucial control files and settings.

Adobe is holding a free, interactive online seminar, which will be hosted by Tom Aldous, Adobe Technical Communication Evangelist, and Neil Perlin, an Adobe Partner and an internationally acclaimed Subject Matter Expert in online help and documentation. Adobe promises that by participating in this seminar, you’ll wind up with greater consistency and maintainability within and across your help projects.

The pharmaceutical industry doesn’t just make medications for patients to take. In order for physicians and patients to use these medications appropriately, the instructions for the medication need to be easy to read and easy to implement. With the proper medication notes, a patient can be accurately assessed to see if they’re the right fit for a treatment plan – or not.

In Burlingame, California, the Center for Professional Advancement is offering a course in technical writing for pharmaceutical and allied industries. This weekend course will help not only those dedicated only to medical technical writing, but also to those who are tasked with creating the medications.
