You’ve gotten to that point. That point when you can’t think of anything to say that will impress an audience.  All writers have.  Some call it writer’s block; others call it burnout.

No matter what you might call it, it’s a sign that you need to push away from your desk and get away from the keyboard.

But what can you do to keep your mind from slowing down if you don’t have time to step away for a vacation?

  • Think 25-minute blocks – Your brain may just need to have more breaks during the day, so cutting up your time into 25-minute blocks, with 5 minutes for rest between each one, can help you stay on task and stay fresh.
  • Do something different – Sometimes, you can switch up the kinds of tasks you’re doing to restart your writing brain.  After all, you’ll still be thinking about that first thing you need to write, even when you’re doing something else, which might allow you to approach it from a different angle when you return to the assignment.
  • Go outside – Sometimes you just need to get out of the house or the coffee shop. Step away, think about something else besides your writing, and allow your brain to relax.

Taking a break isn’t an admission of defeat.  It’s an admission of the need to take a break.  Every writer needs one.  And there are no prizes for the writer who can sit at the desk the longest.

    Some good tips given here.

    I’ve many times used a variation on “Do something different” by simply leaving the laptop and walking around while thinking about what I want to write. Better ideas seem to come when the leg muscles are working and carrying weight.

    Also, some writers use “standing desks”, because they feel their use contributes to greater creativity…plus…health benefits (studies linking prolonged sitting and a sedentary lifestyle to poor cardiovascular health).
