If you’ve been sitting at your computer screen for hours (or days), you might need to walk away. Of course, deadlines don’t necessarily allow you to stop writing completely, but this hesitation might be a sign. When an idea isn’t working, it’s time to give it up…and move onto something new.

  • Look for another angle – Maybe you can use your topic, but you need to approach it from another perspective.
  • Research what others have said about the topic – Get online to see what others have already said about your idea. What are they missing?
  • Ask yourself what the reader wants to know – Start thinking about your reader and what they really want to know about the topic.
  • Reach out for help on social media – Ask for others to brainstorm on your topic. Posting a tweet or a status update for ideas can often trigger creative solutions.

Sometimes, you may not be able to come up with a new idea or a new approach. That might be the sign that you need to write about something different. And when you make this decision, you may find your writing becomes better.

Some ideas just don’t work in the moment. Maybe the idea can work at a later time.
