WIne Loving Technical Writer Wanted

Want to combine your love of wine with your writing skills? Technical writing isn’t just limited to the technology field or medical technical writing anymore. Because the need to instruct and to inform audiences is universal, more types of companies are seeking the skills of professional technical writers.

In an ad posted by Treasury Wine Estates in Napa, CA, they’re hiring a technical writer to help them with the following responsibilities: “Plans, designs, writes, publishes and updates documentation (primarily Standard Operating Procedures [SOPs]) for the Napa Bottling Center (NBC).”

But what does this technical writer need to do? The post lists:


  • Create and revise content of NBC’s document library (including Standard Operating Procedures [SOPs], forms, photo standards, changeover matrices)
  • Simultaneously manage the development of several documents in various stages of development (e.g., drafting, validation, final review, publication)
  • Use good technical writing practices (including information “chunking,” consistent terminology, consistent formatting) to produce clear and complete instructions for users
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (including packaging technicians, maintenance mechanics, lab technicians, cellar technicians, and material handlers) to draft and refine content
  • Study existing technical material (including current documents, technical manuals, previous risk assessments) to gather information needed for new/revised document
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with supervisors and management to understand document needs, schedule deadlines, and communicate updates
  • Analyze the needs of each document’s target audience and tailor content and style to meet those needs
  • Liaise with Treasury Wine Estates’ corporate document management function to publish new/revised documents to the central repository


  • BA/BS in English, Communications, or related field (or equivalent education, skills and experience)
  • Experience in technical writing (ability to assimilate technical information and define/document detailed instructions)
  • Excellent writing skills (including clear syntax, strong vocabulary, good grammar, and an ability to structure thoughts and material in a logical sequence)
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English
  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus
  • Proficiency with basic computer operations, specifically MS Office [Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint], Visio, and Adobe Acrobat Writer
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Self-motivated and an ability to work with minimal supervision
