2nd January 2015 Posted in Blog, Events 0 Comments

Image for TC Camp 2015 Post

TC Camp 2015 will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 in Santa Clara, CA.

TC Camp refers to itself as the “unconference” where technical communications professionals ask questions and discuss issues, challenges and applications of concern to them. It’s driven by members of that community in the Bay Area and those who support them.

The program is scheduled to run from 8:30AM until 6:00PM with registration beginning at 8:00AM. Hands-on workshops are conducted in the morning after a general session. This year’s workshops will include:

  1. Adobe workshop
  2. Mobile workshop
  3. API workshop
  4. Doc portal workshop

Three one-hour sessions are held in the afternoon followed by a Summary session. The conference’s afternoon agenda is created on the day of the event by the attendees who nominate and vote on topics during the general session first thing in the morning. One attendee must agree to be the facilitator and one the note taker (scribe).

2015 TC Conferences Around the World All on One Map

31st December 2014 Posted in Blog, Events 0 Comments

tech-comm-conferences-2015-230x83

We previously told you about the awesome Google Maps project Sara Maddox over at the FFeathers blog had set up for Tech Comm on a Map.

Sarah now reports that she has updated the map to show all of the 2015 technical communication conferences that she’s found so far. You can just go to the map, de-select everything except Conferences 2015 and you can see the conference locations for the upcoming year. Hovering over a location gives you details on that conference.

Pretty nifty stuff, we’d have to say. If you have a conference you know about that’s not already on the map, Sarah has all the info needed on the project information page on how you can add it.

What technical communications conference are you planning to attend in 2015? What do you think of the Tech Comm on a Map project? Please leave a comment.

Mike Doyle provides just what you need to give yourself a fighting chance in How To Justify Conference Attendance.

Read the article and then leave a comment here. What other arguments have you made to justify the expense of going to a conference? What benefits have you experienced personally from going to conferences?

Justifying Conference Attendance

26th April 2013 Posted in Blog, Career Development, Events 0 Comments

atlanta-conference-attendance-813247_19174497-229x169

With conference season in full swing, and especially with STC’s Technical Communications Summit ’13 coming up early next month in Atlanta, it seemed like a good time to offer some tips on justifying conference attendance.

In times of tight budgets it can be very challenging to get the boss to spring for you or others in your group to attend a professional conference. But the experience itself, the opportunity to chat with peers person-to-person, and the various learning benefits provided by a well-run conference can make it a worthwhile expense.

Mike Doyle provides timeless advice in his article, How To Justify Conference Attendance. Since it was first published, Mike’s article continues to be one of the most popular on our site.

Read the article and then leave a comment here. Can you provide additional insight on how to convince those who control the purse strings that conference attendance is vital to improving your skills or those of your group? How did you get the okay, and what were some of the objection you had to overcome?

Rough Drafts at a Technical Writing Conference? Why Not?

1st June 2012 Posted in Blog, Events 0 Comments

Contrary to popular belief, technical writing conferences aren’t as boring as outsiders might think.  At the STC 2012 in Chicago, one thing attendees found out is that Rough Drafts certainly do have a place at this sort of technical writing conference: on stage.  Formed by two STC members, The Rough Drafts played at the technical conference on Monday May 21st.

In all seriousness, what about rough drafts and their value for technical writing?  Just like any writer, the key to being able to produce a strong final copy is to take the time to create many other subpar copies.  Over and over, the text can be written and rewritten through various iterations ensuring the targeted audience will get the documentation they truly need.
